Culloden Battlefield & Visitor Centre
On 16th April 1746 the Jacobites rose and fought, encouraged by Bonnie Prince Charlie to fend off the Duke of Cumberland’s army. They wanted to restore the Stuart monarchy to the throne. Fatalities were lost on both sides, but the British aligned with southern Scots won the day and left the Highlanders dead or dying. This is a site of not only historic importance, but also an emotional war grave. Around 1,600 men died that day, 1,500 of them Jacobites.
Do you remember the famous scene in Outlander where Claire and Frank spend their second honeymoon visiting the battle scene? Claire and Jamie also say their tearful goodbyes on the eve of one of the most bloodiest battles and the last battle to be fought on British soil. The events leading up to the famous Battle of Culloden are also featured in the Outlander series.
